About 2 months ago, a fellow blogger wrote a post about her favourite Hakka restaurant. I told her that I knew a better place and after a major delay, here it is!
I’ve been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. It’s my go-to if I want Hakka and I was able to drag my family out last night for a quick meal.
Chung Moi, located at 2412 Eglinton Ave E, Toronto, ON M1K 2P3, is proof that looks can be deceiving. It’s nothing fancy, but the food is great and the owners, who we’ve known for years, are really nice people.
The place seats about 40 and is usually quite full in the evenings and on weekends. You can also order take-out. They don’t deliver though!
A major draw for us is that they serve ONLY Halal meat which is has made our lives that much easier! It’s sad how limited our food choices and the fact that I had my first real burger in January of this year (in Dubai) is a sign of how much I’ve missed.
I can’t say that we’ve tried everything on this menu… maybe about 25% of it because we are picky people! Over the years we’ve narrowed it down to about 6-7 staples that we always order. On occasion, we’ll experiment. Today was not one of those days.
My family had eaten an early dinner but came along anyway, so we only ordered 4 of our favourites: the Manchurian Mixed Fried Rice, Vegetable Chow Mein, Stir Fry Sautee Green Beans, and Chef’s Special Shrimp Chili Dry.
The portions are fairly large and I may be biased, but once you eat their Manchurian Fried Rice, you’ll have a hard time enjoying it elsewhere. Spicy, flavourful and reasonably priced, it’s a must-try if you’re in the area.
What’s your favourite Hakka restaurant?
